Films to watch out for in 2009

Another year has passed by so quickly and it has seen some great films – some of the films I really enjoyed and kept me on the edge of my seat included The Dark Knight, Man On Wire, The Orphanage, Persepolis, Gone Baby Gone and Sweeney Todd.

So, what’s in store for 2009, well, lots actually, but here are just some of the few films I’ve earmarked for ’09, which I’d like to watch at the cinema.

The Wrestler

Let’s start off with The Wrestler – Directed by Darren Aronofsky. I’ve followed Aronofsky’s work since his first feature-length film, Pi. Since then I’ve watched all his films and have come to realise he’s a great story-teller and has an aptitude for good cinematography – notably seen in his last film, The Fountain.

The Wrestler stars Mickey Rourke as he plays the role of Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson, a retired professional wrestler making his way through the independent wrestling circuit trying to make it to the big time again. The trailer for the film is one of the best I’ve seen. Ok, so I’m a little partial to Darren Aronofsky films, but I have to say I’m quite excited about The Wrestler. It hits UK cinemas in January. Che (Parts 1 + 2)

The eagerly awaited movie, Che – Directed by Steven Soderbergh stars Benicio Del Toro as Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara, the revolutionary. The film is a biopic of his rise to power. If you want to know more about Che Guevara – The Motorcyle Diaries starring Gael Garcia Bernal centres on the motorcycle road trip Guevara went on with his best friend Alberto Granado and explores the motivations which led to the birth of the revolutionary Che Guevara. Che – Part 1 hits UK cinemas in early January with Che – Part 2 coming in February. Check out the trailer here:

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a fantasy film Directed by Terry Gilliam. It stars the late Heath Ledger, Christomer Plummer, Johnny Depp amongst others. Doctor Parnassus played by Christoper Plummer takes audience members through a magical mirror to explore their imaginations. This was Heath Ledger’s last film and with his death half-way through production his role was finished by Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell who play transformations of Heath Ledger’s character. The film is set to be released late in 2009. Until then here’s a teaser trailer:
