Harsh Times is the brainchild of David Ayer, writer of Training Day. This was a similar kind of story that involved crime, drugs and violence. The films main stars are Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriguez who play best friends out to find work in South Central, Los Angeles.

Bale who plays the role of ‘Jim David’, an ex-army ranger who must make a decision that will ultimately change his life forever.
But his fragile and unpredictable personality ultimately takes over revealing the scars of war.

His sophisticated and detailed storytelling, coupled with a unique visual language has made him a highly respected and inventive filmmaker with over 30 years experience in the film industry...

As a break from revision, the trip down to my local cinema was not surprising. I’d only seen and heard about the ‘Inside Man’ from trailers and various reviews online. Oh by the way, the trailer doesn’t give away much about the film.

I was interested in what Director Spike Lee would bring to an exhausted genre, like the ‘hostage thriller’, ‘cops and robbers’ type of film. The ensemble cast, of which, included Willem Dafoe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jodie Foster, Clive Owen, Christopher Plummer and Denzel Washington, was a pleasant surprise, and no one can doubt their acting credentials.

The ‘Inside Man’ puts a new twist on this type of film through the character’s and the intelligent script...

The drug culture, guns, violence and murder are all prevalent in this tale that depicts the lives of the youngsters in Rio de Janeiro. The rivalry between gangs struggling over power and domination overflows into the streets, where it affects everyone young and old. In an effort to try and distance himself from all of this, Rocket dreams of becoming a photographer so that he can leave the 'City of God'. City of God is brutally honest and heartfelt. Based on a true story, this film captures Rocket as he grows during the sixties...

La Haine AKA Hate (1995) – Review

The film is summed up by its title and depicts the journey of three friends during the riots in the mid 1990's. Set in an urban backdrop, La Haine is very realistic in showing the young people's hate towards authority figures such as the police. Riots, fires, guns, drugs, violence and rascism are all part of the film.
