X-Men – The Last Stand (2006) – Review

Directed by Brett Ratner

Having seen the two previous films in the series, and having grown up watching the X-Men cartoons I knew enough about many of the characters. This latest instalment in the popular series sees a continuation from the last film X-Men 2, with all the main characters still present, but accompanied with many new faces including Dr. Hank McCoy aka ‚ÄòBeast‚Äô, ‚ÄòJuggernaut‚Äô and Warren Worthington aka ‚ÄòAngel‚Äô…

So, what is X-Men – The Last Stand, all about? The government have found a way to suppress the mutant ‘X’ gene, calling it a ‘cure’. For some, the idea of a cure is very appealing, but for ‘Magneto’ and his brotherhood they see it as chance to start a conflict. The character of ‘Dark Phoenix’ emerges as the most powerful mutant confused and uncontrollable. Not to give too much away the film has some great shock scenes, which you won’t be expecting and coupled with these great special effects. The climax of the film sees a stand off between Magneto and his brotherhood and the X-Men.

The film is a good improvement from the last but still lacked the punch, which it needed to be a great film. With so many characters all with unique powers, we have little time to find out more about them. The character of ‘Wolverine’ played by Hugh Jackman leaps out and is great in the film and in the series.

In some ways this is probably the hardest review I’ve had to write to date, but I must be critical.

Oh can I make a suggestion? Stay and watch the end credits of the film, there is a teaser of what is installed for the future of the X-Men series.
