The Constant Gardener (2005) – Review
Directed by Fernando Meirelles
The Constant Gardener is a sophisticated thriller uncovering the truth behind Africa’s pharmaceutical business. The film explores the hidden agenda behind new medicines that help fight Tuberculosis; these medicines are being administered across Kenya mainly to the poor. Tessa Quayle played by Rachel Wiesz is an activist fighting for aid in Kenya. Justin Quayle played by Ralph Fiennes is a British Diplomat who meets Tessa, and their relationship blossoms into a loving marriage…
After Tessa is brutally murdered in Kenya Justin does the unexpected and embarks on a journey to uncover the truth behind his wife’s murder, he finds the truth no matter what, using all his power and risking his life.
Having now seen two films directed by Fernando Meirelles, he has firmly cemented himself as being one of today’s great director’s. The Constant Gardener’s stunning cinematography and story is unique because it draws you in, slowly adding pieces to the jigsaw puzzle and is tragic.
If you want to see great acting and great cinematography, I recommend you watch The Constant Gardener when it hits us in the UK on DVD.
Congratulations go to Rachel Wiesz for winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
