Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) Review

Directed by Gore Verbinski

Being an admirer of the first film with all its adventure, great characters, awesome costumes, sets and cgi, the sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, was no different and in many ways has evolved from the first film…

In this second instalment an eagerly awaited three years after the original, Dead Man’s Chest sees all the main characters back again, and of course Johnny Depp back again playing the iconic character of ‚ ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’. The plot sees the introduction of a new villain ‚ ‘Davy Jones’, a tyrant of the sea on a quest to settle a debt with Sparrow. With many other new faces such including‚ ‘Bootstrap Bill Turner’ and ‘Tia Dalma’ coupled with amazing sets and action, Dead Man’s Chest is very much an entertaining, fun film.

With all this praise I must remain critical, and so here’s what I thought of the film as a whole. The film lacked an adversary equal to Captain Jack. In the first film the character of Captain Barbossa played by Jeffrey Rush was very commendable. He brought to the screen a cold-hearted villain out to rid himself of a the curse, which had turned him into an immortal rotting corpse by returning all the pieces of Aztec gold, which he had stolen.

With all its great sets, cgi and great one-liners, the film wasn’t as compact as the first, and maybe a little too long. Having said this, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man‚Äôs Chest is still very much a must see film for this summer.

8/10
